Two out of the 30 elected councillors on Mayo County Council are travelling to Leinster House today to discuss the Defective Block Compensation Scheme for households with pyrite or mica.

All 30 councillors on Mayo County Council were invited to do so, however, the North Mayo Pyrite Group told Midwest News this morning that just two local representatives opted to attend. They are both Fine Gael councillors, Foxford based Neil Cruise and Killala based Jarlath Munnelly.

In contrast, 19 Donegal County Councillors have committed to attend today’s proceedings, according to the North Mayo Pyrite Group spokesperson.

The councillors from various counties across the country will attend a meeting of the Oireachtas Housing Committee and also hope to meet with the Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien.

Householders affected by pyrite and mica say they want parity in terms of a compensation scheme with the scheme secured for people living in apartments with building defects.

Midwest News hopes to hear from both councillors Munnelly and Cruise on our Lunchtime News today
