The electricity bill for Leinster House has more than tripled in the space of a year.

The cost of keeping the lights on in parliament went from just over 36 thousand euro in December 2021 to almost 114 thousand euro for December 2022 - according to today's Sunday Independent.

Increased use of the Oireachtas wood-fired boiler meant heating costs remained much lower - at 22 thousand euro for last December.

The Oireachtas had introduced a number of measures to reduce usage, including turning off the heat two hours before the complex closes.
