The infrastructure is not in place to cater for the likely significant increase in “staycationers”  this July and August that will holiday along the Wild Atlantic Way along the Mayo coastline, if the Covid Restrictons are lifted.

That was the clear message from Achill based councillor Paul McNamara at yesterday’s monthly meeting of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District.

Cllr McNamara says the requirements are simple – additional council staff on the ground are required, additional bins, bottlebanks and toilets are needed, together with controls on parking along routes leading to internationally renowned locations like Achill’s Keem Bay.

He says, Achill, Mulranny, Newport and Belmullet areas require the level of infrastructure and services that are available in Westport town at the height of the tourist season.
