A volunteer with Castlebar Tidy Town’s collected 192 cans yesterday, thrown indiscriminately along public roadways and amenity areas in the county town.
Earlier this week, along the walkway at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar two Tidy Town volunteers picked up 80 cans littered in the area, together with more than 20 bottles.
The problem of litter has got out of control, according to Ger Deere of Castlebar Tidy Towns, and a local councillor.
He says since the start of the pandemic, this time last year, the problem of litter along roads and at amenity sites in the county appears to have got worse, and he is appealing to anyone out and enjoying themselves to please don’t litter, dispose of your rubbish properly and if there are no bins bring it home and throw it away.
Cllr Deere has been speaking to Midwest News about the scourge of indiscriminate dumping of household rubbish in rural areas and litter along the county’s streets and roads.
