A man in his late 70's has died in a two-vehicle collision between Cross and The Neale in south Mayo.

Shortly before noon today, a car and a lorry were involved in a crash, and the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The R334 between Cross and The Neale remains closed to traffic this evening, while a forensic examination is underway, and diversions are in place.

The lorry driver was taken to Mayo University Hospital for medical assessment.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact them at Claremorris Garda Station at 094 - 9372080, and are appealing also for anyone with dash-cam footage from along this route at the time of the collision to make it available to Gardai.
