The centre of Galway city has an incidence rate of Covid-19 which is over five times the national average.

The local electoral area had a 14-day incidence rate of 1,292 per 100,000 people on Monday.

This is an increase on last week’s figure, when the area had a rate of 951.

It compares to the national average of 240, while Galway City East has the fifth highest rate of infection nationally at 579 cases per 100,000.

Galway city councillor Martina O'Connor says her area's rate is down to cases in NUI Galway and Galway University Hospital.

Three electoral areas in Mayo have an incidence rate higher than the national average.

In Swinford the rate was 388, in Claremorris 380 and in Castlebar it was 300 cases per 100,000.

Westport had a rate of 201, while in Ballina the rate was 104 and in Belmullet it was 79 per 100,000 people.
