An aviation company has applied to Mayo County Council for planning permission to construct a new aircraft hangar at Ireland West Airport Knock, which could create up to 100 jobs.

Eirtrade Aviation Ireland Ltd have been operating from an existing hangar facility at the airport for the past 10 years, and are seeking to expand the scale and scope of their services.

The company is involved in the aircraft disassembly business, and also has a facility in Rathcoole in Dublin.

It provides specialist End-of-Life Engine and Aircraft solution services for some of the world's leading airlines and leasing companies.

The proposed new development at Ireland West Airport Knock will comprise the construction of an aircraft hangar and ancillary aircraft storage area, a new access road onto the R376 and associated site works.

The new hangar will be able to accommodate multiple types of aircraft - including the Airbus A380 - the largest passenger plane in the world.

If planning permission is granted, it's expected up to 110 jobs would be created during the construction phase, and a further 100 jobs once operational.

It would also create a significant aviation hub at the airport - the first of its kind in the West of Ireland.
