The possibility of the GMIT campus in Castlebar operating independently was raised at ministerial level yesterday.

Local Fine Gael Deputy Alan Dillon says he outlined the importance of GMIT Mayo Campus to Minister Simon Harris.

Deputy Dillon says there are opportunities on the table that can enhance GMIT within the Connacht / Ulster Alliance.

He says An Independent review by Mazars of the Implementation of the GMIT Mayo Working Group Plan will be carried out.

Deputy Dillon believes there is a key focus on multi-disciplinary course offerings for the Mayo campus reflective of local industries stemming from a skills need audit.

Further meetings are scheduled with the Minister and GMIT to ensure the Mayo Campus becomes an integral part of the overall GMIT submission for Technological University status.
