Due to the status orange win warning in place from 9pm tonight, Mayo County Council has activated local preparedness plans across all Municipal Districts.

Due to the combination of storm surge, spring tides and onshore winds, there's a potential risk of coastal flooding.

The council says a number of road closures are possible, due to Storm Ellen.

Mayo County Council is advising visitors to the county to be prepared for high winds and severe weather conditions, particularly those on camping and caravan holidays in coastal areas - they're advised to take extra precautions to secure caravans, camping equipment and any other loose items, and follow the advice of campsite management.

Road users should also be aware of road conditions, and minimise their journeys.

Motorists should watch out for flooding and for debris on roads - including fallen trees and electricity wires.
