The number of civilian staff within An Garda Síochána has more than doubled in the past three years.

They now makes up almost a fifth of the overall workforce, according to The Irish Mail on Sunday.

The total number of civilian recruits is 3,277, compared to 1,999 in December 2016.

Figures show there has also been a significant rise in the numbers working in senior management roles in the gardaí.
