The monthly meeting of Mayo County Council will take place this afternoon in Aras an Chontae in Castlebar.

This is the first meeting of the authority since the government’s Covid 19 restrictions have been introduced.

To ensure that social distancing is maintained the meeting will be attended by just 9 of the 30 councillors on the authority, enough to ensure a quorum.

The number of council executive present will also reflect the 2 meter distancing requirement.

Just 2 members of the media will be in attendance, one press and one broadcast journalist.

Speaking to Midwest Radio this morning the CEO of Mayo County Council Peter Hynes says there are a small number of statutory matters to be addressed, and he says there is no legislation in place as yet, that would allow the meeting to take place online or by zoom.

He added that the council will be guided by the dept in terms of the legality of holding future monthly meetings online.
