A Sligo-based county councillor has been selected to take over the European Parliament seat of his Sinn Fein colleague Matt Carthy. 

Mr Carthy was elected to the Dáil in the Cavan - Monaghan constituency in last month's general election.

Councillor Chris MacManus will now take up his seat in Europe, representing the 15 county Midlands-Northwest constituency, and his elevation to the European Parliament means his seat on Sligo County Council will now have to be filled.
