The cutting down of road signs in areas across Co Mayo has been described as thuggery, and vandalism at its worst by Castlebar-based Fianna Fail Councillor Al McDonnell.

Councillor McDonnell says he's aware of road signs being cut down, often in the middle of the night, in the Carnacon and Ballyglass areas, and more recently this practise has extended to Clogher, Ballintubber and other areas of the county.

In some cases, he says the road signs are taken while in other cases they're discarded on the roadside.

He's concerned about the health and safety aspect, as well as the cost of replacing these signs.

Councillor McDonnell has warned those responsible that Gardai and local communities are watching out for those involved in this activity...
