Nearly half of the country’s population is in favour of repealing the 8th amendment.

A new polll shows 47 per cent are planning to vote yes in next month’s referendum, 28 per cent say they'll vote no and 20 per cent say they aren't sure.

The Ipsos/MRBI research for the Irish Times surveyed 12-hundred adults on Monday and Tuesday this week.

Meanwhile, a conference on protecting the 8th amendment will take place in Castlebar on Sunday.

The Fianna Fail deputy leader Dara Calleary, Sinn Fein TD Peader Tobin, businessman Declan Ganley, former Senator Fidelma Healy-Eames, Michael Farrington of Renua in Mayo, GP Dr Anthony O’Reilly and Niamh Uí Bhriain of the Life Institute will address the comference, which takes place in the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar starting at 6pm on Sunday evening.
