Over 21,000 signatures have been collected over the past two months in favour of a light rail system for Galway city.
The long-running campaign is spearheaded by Galway West Independent TD Catherine Connolly who believes such a system is crucial to solving the city’s traffic problems.
However, previous studies have ruled out the potential for light rail in Galway city due to the projected high costs and low uptake.
Deputy Connolly is now calling on the Transport Minister to sanction a feasibility study into a light rail system for Galway, given the projected increase in population over the coming two decades.
The Independent TD says over 21,000 signatures have been collected in an 8-week period, and a website to support the light rail campaign has been relaunched at www.gluas.ie
