With the busy roundabout at Lidl in Castlebar under water due to flooding, and sections of roads all over the Castlebar Municipal District flooded in recent heavy rain, a Castlebar councillior is insisting that Mayo County council open the water tables along the roadsides.

Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne raised the matter at the January meeting of Castlebar Muncipal District.  Heavy rain over last weekend intensified the problems and he is again calling on Mayo county council to implement the opening of the water tables programme along sides of the roads in the district.

He told Midwest News that the failure to clean out gullies and open drains is a major contributing factor to the risks to road users.

The flood signs remain in place at the Lidl roundabout, however, the waters have subsided.
