The body of a second Irish kayaker has been found in Ecuador.

David Higgins, who lived in Galway but was originally from Co Kerry, was one of a group of kayakers who got into difficulty while navigating the River Abanico on Saturday.

20-year old year-old Alex McGourty from Sligo also died in the incident – his body was recovered on Sunday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed this morning that the body of David Higgins has  been recovered from a tributary of the river they had been kayaking in.

Mr Higgins was a graduate of NUI Galway and an active member of the NUIG kayak club.
