A number of weather warnings are in place across Connacht, as temperatures drop with snow and sleet showers sweeping across the region today.

A Status Yellow snow and ice warning remains in place until the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, a status orange wind warning is in place for Mayo, Galway, Sligo, Leitrim and a  number of other coastal counties.

Met Eireann says that, this evening and for a time tonight, storm Fionn will bring very strong westerly winds to Atlantic coastal counties with gusts of up to 120 km/hr, strongest near coasts with a risk of flooding.

There’s also an alert for very high seas along the Atlantic seaboard over the next few days, which may lead to coastal flooding.

A status yellow wind warning applies to Roscommon and a number of inland counties, with gusts of 90-110 km/h.

AA Roadwatch is urging motorists to take care on the roads, particularly drivers of high-sided vehicles during the strong winds.

With strong to gale force winds across Connacht today, Mayo’s Road Safety Officer is advising householders to take steps to prevent wheelie bins being blown around in high winds.

Noel Gibbons says bins blown onto streets and roads can create a real safety risk, and also a litter issue if the contents are blown around.
