
The Mayo Association Dublin has announced the winners of the 2018 Mayo Person of the Year, Mayo Young Person of the Year and Mayo Meitheal awards.
Islandeady native Sr Maureen Lally has been named the Virginia Gallagher Mayo Person of the Year for 2018.
Sr Maureen, who pioneered the Tóchar Valley Rural Community Network, was described as “a true ambassador for Mayo”.
The recipient of the 2018 Mayo Meitheal Award is Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhle Teo in Aughleam, for the massive community effort in assisting those involved in the search for the missing crew of Coastguard Rescue helicopter 116, which crashed off Blacksod last March.
Athlete Michaela Walsh from Swinford is the recipient of the 2018 Young Mayo Person of the Year.
Michaela has set a number of new Irish records for her age group, and has been recognised nationally and internationally, culminating in winning a bronze medal in the hammer at the European Junior Championships in Italy last year.
The awards will be presented to the recipients at The Yew Tree Ball which takes place on10th February.
