A Mayo Senator has described as farcical the practice of the Courts Service investing 9 million euro of funds held in trust for children, in tobacco firms.

Fianna Fail Senator Dr. Keith Swanick told Midwest News today that it makes a mockery of the Government’s Tobacco Free Ireland 2015 plan.

The Courts Service manages more than a billion euro on behalf of children and wards of court who are not deemed legally responsible enough to look after their own money, or awards the courts may give them.

Senator Swanick is now proposing  a Bill for ethical investments in the Seanad in an effort to put an end to the practice.
