The need for an Independent Digital Safety Commissioner to be appointed by the government to patrol online trolls has again been highlighted today by East Galway based deputy Ann Rabbitte, the Fianna Fail spokesperson on  Children and Youth affairs.

Yesterday a court case in Dublin saw a man in his 20s given a suspended jail sentence after repeatedly threatening on social media to kill or cause serious harm to former Galway Senator Lorraine Higgins.

Deputy Rabbitte told Midwest News that it shouldn’t be left up to social media firms to keep people safe.
