A major clean-up operation is continuing in Galway City, where millions of euro in damage was caused to homes and businesses.

A status Orange warning remains in place across the west until 2 pm this afternoon, with damaging gusts continue to batter the region.

The Chief Executive of Galway City Council Brendan McGrath says the devastation caused by Storm Eleanor was ‘unprecedented’and permanent flood defences are needed in the city.

Meanwhile the Minister with responsibility for flooding Kevin Boxer Moran has been in Galway since early this morning where he visited a number of areas worst hit by the flooding.

He told Midwest News that the provision of a major flood defence project for the city is a priority for him and his Department.

Minister Moran also referred to the flooding in the Carrowholly area of Westport, where up to 30 homes were cut off by floods yesterday evening.

The Minister told Midwest News that officials from his Department are working with Mayo County Council to try and fast-track a scheme for the area.
