
There has been a 100% increase of people killed on Mayo roads.
Twelve people lost their lives on our roads in 2017 compared to six the previous year.
However, the figure nationally shows a decrease with the figures indicating a 15% reduction in fatalities on roads in the Republic.
A total of 158 people were killed on our roads last year, which is the lowest annual death toll since records began in 1959.
Mayo is the third highest county with road traffic fatalities for 2017 and Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council Noel Gibbons says one death is one death too many.
Meanwhile, The Transport Minister is warning that speed limits are still being ignored.
The latest road safety figures show 158 people died on Irish roads in 2017.
The new target is to reduce that number to 124 by the year 2020.
Shane Ross thinks the faster people drive the more penalty points they should get.
He says the rules need to get tougher.
