Shanaghy, Ballina, Co. Mayo and formerly of Rinboy, Fanad, Co. Donegal - surrounded by his loving family.

James, beloved husband of Anne and dear father of Declan, Eithne, Deirdre, Fergus and Aoife.

Sadly, missed by his wife, sons, daughters, brother Humphrey, sons-in-law Anthony, Michael and Enda, daughters-in-law Sandra and Aimée his 17 grandchildren, nephews, nieces, extended Baxter and Friel Families.

Rest in peace.

Reposing at his Residence on Saturday evening from 4 o’clock until 8 o’clock.

Funeral will arrive at St. Muredach's Cathedral, Ballina on Sunday for Requiem Mass at 12.30 followed by burial in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.

James’ Funeral Mass will be live streamed on www.ballinaparish.org

Family flowers only please. Donations if desired to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Ballina c/o McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina.

So sorry to hear of Jim’s sad passing. Deepest sympathy to Anne & family. Jim was a proud Donegal man, who loved his adopted Mayo in equal measure. I cherish my last telephone conversation with him a number of weeks ago. He made light of his illness as we talked & laughed about mischievous grandchildren. Jim contributed so much to Ballina both in uniform & in his retirement as chairman of Tidy Towns committee. All done with the minimum of fuss. I envied his command of our native language, which he used at the start of all our retired gardai meetings. Jim, your smiling presence will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. May Jim’s kind & gentle soul rest in peace.

It was with much sadness I learned of the death of our colleague Jim Friel. He was a decent and honourable person who brought much credit to the Garda Siochana and to the Garda Siochana Retired Members Association (GSRMA). I am deeply indebted to our late colleague for his work on behalf of retired Gardai in Mayo and further afield. Much of this went unnoticed; this was in keeping with Jim's way of working for the benefit of others.
