Fr Gerry French from Mossbrook, Claremorris, was one noble son of Mayo. He was a member of the Columban Fathers and served overseas for a time in the Philippines and Korea . He did Trojan work during his years with the Irish Chaplaincy in England, especially in London and Birmingham, and, in more recent times spent ten years serving the Ballymun community in Dublin. He was imbued with a great love for Mayo football, encyclopaedic in its nature, and won a county junior medal with Claremorris. He was a regular at the Mayo Association gatherings on both sides of the Irish Sea and never lost his love for the land of his birth. He loved coming home to Mossbrook and Brize and his fondness and knowledge of the people was amazing. Mayo was carved in his generous heart. I extend condolences to all the French family and to his many friends and colleagues at this time. Truly can it be said that Fr Gerry was ‘one of the stout-hearted men from the county Mayo’.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
