IT was a privilege to cover so many hurling games in which Pierce played his heart out for Ballyhaunis and Mayo. He always gave 100% and had that wonderful ability to inspire all around him. He was the genuine sportsman who won equal appreciation from his opponents. I often saw shades of former Offaly hurler Johnny Pilkington in Pierce’s disposition. In 2020 when Ballyhaunis defeated Tooreen in the senior final, Pierce was going through his MN journey, yet he was the main inspiration for the tenacious Ballyhaunis display that day. As some Tooreen lads and club members so genuinely admitted afterwards, “They (Ballyhaunis”) deserved it. They wanted that one so badly for Pierce”. To all the wonderful Higgins family and friends, our hearts go out to ye all at this poignant time. It was such an honour to know Pierce, respect his greatness on the hurling fields and his incredible bravery over the last five years. A legend in every sense of the word.
