Deepest sympathy on the passing of Fr. John. Fr. John brought the gift of music to our family and the community of Errew. The love of music which he inspired has continued down through the generations. We are very grateful for the wonderful start we got to our musical journey as members of "The Spoons". We were always delighted to see Fr. John coming to visit us at home and have lots of fond memories of happy times. May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.

Our sincere condolences to Fr John's extended family. We were only talking about him yesterday morning before we found out about his death as our own father Johnny Thomas passed away on the same day as Fr John. They were great buddies when he lived in Castlebar. He spent many a night in our house as they chatted about many subjects. My mother had a special china cup that was and still is referred to as 'Fr McCarthy's cup'! Fr John taught many of us music when we were younger and we all fondly remember the group he assembled - 'The Spoons' and one infamous, three hour concert that we starred in and that he directed! He introduced us to a lifelong love of traditional music. His fast masses were sought after by many, we visited him in Knock a couple of years ago and were delighted to catch up with him again. He was a gentleman and was respected and loved in this area. We hope he and Dad have caught up again in heaven. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Sincere sympathy to the nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbours of Fr John, on his sudden death. We have been a family friend of Fr John since he was a curate in Castlebar. As children attending Errew NS, he always bought sweets...Black Magic, Roses, Quality Street on his school visits in the late 70/ early 80 and we loved when he suggested "no homework tonight" to the teachers. Fr John was so generous with his time and talents. He started music classes free of charge for kids, initially teaching in Errew Monastery and then at Knockaphunta. He always saw the best in us and created 2 groups...."The Spoons" and "The Chancers"...like the name suggests, he had a super sense of humour . I'm sure he was as deeply missed from every parish as he was from Castlebar. Fr John was a priest ahead of his time. He was open, honest and very witty man. We pray he is now in his heavenly home, reunited with all those he knew and loved. ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

We are so sorry to hear of Fr John's passing. We enjoyed our chats when he was out for his walk. May he rest in peace.

Fr John was a much loved member of our Retirement Village at Carrowmore Meadows. He always greeted one with a mischievous grin and a happy smile and one left feeling all the better for the encounter. He had his serious moments and gave prudent advice when needed. Very often what seemed a serious issue became a matter of laughter. He was a priest who walked with God and our lives were enriched by having met him on Life’s path. We miss him very much, but are pleased his pain is over. We can pray to him to intercede with God for us. Rest In Peace noble soul.! Francis o Dwyer and friends from Carrowmore Meadows.
Philip Beirne, Breaffy( formerly Saleen Castlebar)
So sorry to hear about Father John's passing. He was hugely admired in Castlebar and surrounding areas in the 80s when he was a priest here as he taught scores of young people music and put on many entertainment nights in the local parish halls. We were part of his traditional music band called "The Spoons" and many a concert we performed. Father John passed on his love of music to a generation of young people, many who are still playing music today because of his inspiration, his teaching & his patience! Thanks for inspiring a love of music to us all Father John, you will never be forgotten. RIP
