Very Reverend Canon Michael Joyce
Retired Parish Priest of Curry, Swinford and Bohola, formerly of St Patrick's College, Swinford and St. Nathy's College Ballaghaderreen - peacefully at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar after a short illness.

Son of the late Jennie and Michael Joyce Providence Road, Foxford.

Predeceased by his brothers Walter and Anthony.
Deeply mourned by his sister Eleanor McGuinness (Ballisodare), Tommie (Foxford), sisters-in-law Marie (Foxford), Phil (Dublin), nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, Bishop Paul Dempsey, Priests and Religious, Parishioners, former colleagues, students and a wide circle of friends.

Rest in Peace Canon Michael

Removal from Clarkes Funeral Home, Foxford on Thursday at 2 o’clock via Providence Road; Chapel Road and Bohola village to arrive at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Swinford via Main Street for Funeral Mass at 3 o’clock followed by burial in the Church grounds.

I remember him with fondness as a student in Ballyhaunis and Nathys basketball team would come to play a match and I'd be employed to do the table, the enthusiasm and passion he had for the game, left me in awe, both he and Fr. I want to offer my sincere sympathy to the Joyce and McGuinness families on the death of Fr (Canon) Joyce. Those of us who came under his influence and guidance, in the 70's and 80's, he had an immense impact on our lives. Having spent over thirty years in education, I now recognise that Fr Joyce epitomised what it to be a good teacher and minister.

Being from Swinford, I shared many conversations with him over the years. He always had a welcome for past students and remembered the minutest detail of your time in school. His death brings a great sense of sadness, but also gratefulness, that I, and so many others, were fortunate to have known and being guided by him.

So sorry to hear of his passing. Recently communicated with him. Michael was a lovely man who was compassionate and kind. I recall during an internal league game of football I played center forward and he was center back on the opposing team. On a run through he hit me hard. Afterward he came up to me and said he was sorry, although it was a fair hit and part of the game. Once when I stopped by to see him during his tenure at St Nathy’s he remembered that event many years ago. He was a good athlete and gave back to sport with his excellent coaching skills, for which he will be remembered. Sorry we never met again. RIP.

As a teacher, a basketball coach, a mentor, a priest, a generous person - he was a legend. He had all this and a lot more.
From my days as a boarder in St. Nathy’s, I have many fond memories of Fr. Michael. The many successful basketball competitions, the basketball week-end trips away, his coaching skills.
His constant all-round words of encouragement, his good humour. His unique way of teaching - making boring subjects interesting, his unique way of making mass less boring for an Oratory full of young lads.
His driving skills were also legendary! I had a few close calls as a passenger that myself and the lads and Fr. Michael himself always laughed about for years after.
To me he was always a friend first, a priest second, he had that unique quality about him.
We have all lost a good friend.

He had a great interest in sport and games and above all an ability to analyse the opponents strategy and counteract it. As a former pupil at St Patrick's College, I remember his enthusiasm and his attention to detail. Later, while working with him in the school community, he was always supportive, positive and took great interest in the work going on and the welfare of the pupils. A great man of faith, but his eyes lit up when the subject of any sport was mentioned - a true enthusiast with a great understanding of the skills involved.
As with other parishes, he is a huge loss to the Swinford community, where his sincerity and common sense touched the lives of young and old.
As a family, we remember his support in happy and in sad times.

Sorry to hear this news. Condolences to all his family especially his brother who once gave me a summer job through the connection and his nephew who started in Nathy's during my time there. Among his many achievements let it not be forgotten that we've lost a member of the only St Nathy's Hogan Cup winning team, something he did as a student long before I or many here got to know him. He loved his football but came to learn & love basketball and like many here I benefited from his coaching on many winning basketball teams and travelled many miles with him. A crazy driver! He was the first to rush to congratulate me on a success in athletics at a another school. Much later during his time in Curry, my mother's home parish, I met him again on trips from Australia for family occasions during his time there. Fr Michael Joyce studied science as a young man. This gave him a source of insights into life and he had wonder and awe in Gods presence and could convey it well to others. He was very supportive of me as a seminarian and a priest and of my family in Swinford. A priest is very privileged in the way he steps into peoples lives and breaths God’s breath into the many situations of people. Fr Michael touched many lives and many hearts. He wasn’t afraid to relax with lay people especially playing cards and you would need to be highly skilful to get a soft trick if you were playing against him. In recent times we often did a crossword together in the Gateway Hotel and his absolute confidence in my ability to finish the crossword always spurred me on to do exactly that. Such opportunities for showing off ones genius rarely occur these days for a priest and with an audience also! That was Fr Michael an man who encouraged me as well as others. It is indeed with great sadness that I heard of the passing of Fr. Michael Joyce. In my opinion was the best maths teacher I ever encountered on my educational journey through St. Nathy's College. Also a fantastic football & basketball coach he passed on his knowledge of those sports in a very competitive way. My greatest memory of him was when I was doing my Junior Cert in 1974 I was a boarder so lived in the College for the duration of the exam & couldn't believe my luck of Fr. Michael inviting a few lads to travel down to Sligo for first round of Connacht championship I think game was against Roscommon. One of the lads that travelled with us was Gigger O Connor(he was doing his Leaving Cert) who later played iAll Ireland final of 1980 for The Rossies. Sligo won with Mickey Kearins playing a stormer. On the way home Fr. Michael called to his sister(Mrs Mc Guinness) after several plates of sandwiches returned to St. Nathy's very satisfied with our day out.

I was sad to hear last night that Canon Michael had died. I knew him since I was 12 years old. I will remember him fondly from St. Nathy's where he trained our football team. He was both an uncompromising competitor and also kind and generous. After a victory we would return to the college delighted in his Volkswagen (often at high speed) with our pockets full of goodies at his expense. I remember him later as a dedicated Chairman of our Board of Management in Swinford NS where he always offered great support and encouragement. He was a man of great integrity and honour.
I last spoke to him after his brother Tony died. He was heartbroken at being unable to travel to Rathfarnham to celebrate the funeral mass.
A true gentleman, a great priest and a friend to many.
