Martin Sweeney (former postman)

Straide, Foxford.

Sadly missed by his brother Tommy (Cork) Sister in law Nellie (Straide), Nieces, Nephews, Neighbours and Wide circle of friends.

Removal on Thursday evening at 6 o’clock to St. Peter and Pauls Church, Straide.

Mass on Friday at 12 noon followed by burial in the new Cemetery.

Due to HSE guidelines regarding Covid 19, the funeral service and burial for Martin is private and confined to family members only.

A Memorial Mass to celebrate Martin's life will be held at a later date.

Lonesome to hear of the passing of the "Quiet Man" from Straide. Martin was a man of great intellect and he faithfully filed daily weather reports for RTE from his "station" for more than five decades. I got to know him very well through our shared interest in shortwave radio and spent a good few pleasant visits in his home scanning the shortwave bands for remote stations. He was widely read and had an amazing knowledge of the geography of the world. He was perhaps the only person I know who was totally fascinated by places north of us ....and he visited Iceland (on a few occasions), the Scandinavian countries and right to the Russian border. The sunnier climes of the southern countries did not hold the same appeal for him at all. Martin was a real gentleman and he will be remembered with great fondness by all of us who knew him. Peace to his gentle soul.
